Is Homemade Sunscreen Effective?

Some homemade sunscreens are more effective than others. SunJewel sunscreen has an SPF of 40 and was thoroughly tested to ensure customers do not get burnt (it must be reapplied!)

4 Ways to Take Care of Your Skin this Summer

This summer, protecting your skin starts with wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapplying, and covering up. Be mindful to hydrate your skin inside and out by drinking plenty of water and using moisturizers.

 FAQs

  • Homemade sunscreens usually last around 4 or 5 months from when they were made because no chemical preservatives are added. For example, if the product was made in March, then it would last until August. Vitamin E serves as a preservative, however.

  • SPF chapsticks will last longer (up to a year) because the ingredients have longer shelf lives. The products are colored and flavored with freeze-dried fruit instead of oils, flavoring, or fragrances.

  • Most homemade sunscreens are made with oils and other hydrophobic ingredients that repel water. The sunscreen will still wash off eventually and needs to be reapplied.

  • Zinc oxide has an SPF of 10 for every ounce. There are two ounces in SunJewel sunscreen. This mineral ingredient deflects the sun's rays off of your skin and provides protection against the broadest range of UV which is UVA and UVB rays (Rojeck).

  • Since there is no zinc in the recipe, red raspberry seed oil accounts for most of the SPF. This ingredient has an"SPF of between 28 and 50 for UVA rays and up to SPF 8 for UVB rays" (Ingredient Insight). iption
