Is Homemade Sunscreen Effective?

The SPF of the Pineapple Coconut sunscreen is 40. The SPF of the chapsticks is 20. How did I know for sure? Let me tell you how I came to that conclusion.

I spent a significant amount of time researching the sun protection factors of each ingredient. The zinc oxide mineral gives the sunscreen a white color, but it also provides the most protection (10 SPF for every ounce) My sunscreen has 2 ounces, so 20 SPF. Natural oils such as raspberry seed oil also increase the overall SPF of the sunscreen. An article I read titled “Ingredient Spotlight: Red Raspberry Seed Oil” mentioned how red raspberry seed oil has an SPF of 8 for UVB rays and 30-50 for UVA.

Sunscreens

  • 2 oz Zinc oxide - 20

  • Non-phototoxic essential oil - 1

  • Red raspberry seed oil - 8

  • Sweet almond oil - 5

  • Shea butter - 6

  • Other ingredients such as aloe vera gel, beeswax, and coconut oil have no SPF.

Chapsticks

The chapsticks will have an SPF of anywhere from 15-20 because smaller measurements of the ingredients were used.

  • 0.5 oz Zinc oxide - 5

  • 10 drops Red raspberry seed oil - 7

  • Shea butter - 3

  • Other ingredients such as coconut oil, vitamin E oil, and beeswax have no SPF.
